Cousin Pons
Sylvain Pons, an ugly old conductor at a boulevard theatre, lives for two things: dinner at the tables of rich relations who despise him, and a collection of pictures and curiosities bought cheap over fifty years and worth a fortune none of them has guessed at. When the family finally shuts its door on him, his concierge finds out what is hanging on his walls and begins assembling the people who can help her get it. The second of the Poor Relations, written directly after Cousin Bette, and the last book Balzac finished.
