Memento Mori

Muriel Spark · 1959 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

A circle of Londoners in their seventies and eighties, bound to one another by decades of adultery, blackmail and inherited grudges, begin taking anonymous telephone calls that say only: remember you must die. Some ring the police, some ring the retired Inspector who has taken up the subject professionally, and one of them keeps a card index of everybody's secrets. Spark takes the medieval reminder at its word and gives it a telephone.
