The Driver's Seat
A woman who has kept the same accountant's-office job for sixteen years buys a deliberately hideous outfit, takes her leave, and flies to a southern city, telling everyone she meets that she is going to join her boyfriend. She is not; she is looking for someone in particular, and the narration keeps slipping forward into a tense that already knows how the search comes out. Spark named it her own favourite, and its flat forward-telling drains the suspense out of a thriller and leaves the design showing.
