The Comforters

Muriel Spark · 1957 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

Caroline Rose, newly received into the Catholic Church and stuck at a retreat house she cannot stand, starts to hear a typewriter and a chorus of voices reciting her own thoughts a moment after she has them. Her fiancé's grandmother, meanwhile, is running diamonds through a ring of respectable elderly parishioners. Spark's first novel, written as she came out of a breakdown, and already a book about a character who works out that she is inside one.
