The Love of a Good Woman

Alice Munro · 1998 CE · Short Story · Modern / American · Contemporary

Three boys swimming in the Peregrine River one spring morning in 1951 find the town optometrist upside down in his car below the bank, and each goes home to dinner without mentioning it. A practical nurse seeing a farm woman through her last weeks is meanwhile told things she would rather not have been told. The title piece runs to novella length and took the National Book Critics Circle Award.
