Three Soldiers

John Dos Passos · 1921 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Modernist

Three men are fed into the same apparatus — Fuselli, a San Francisco optical-goods clerk working the angles for a corporal's stripes; Chrisfield, an Indiana farm boy nursing a grudge against a sergeant; Andrews, a Harvard-trained composer who enlisted to be rid of his own will. Training camp, the crossing, a few weeks of shelling, and then the long occupation months in France, where the drill and the paperwork do more damage than the front did. Dos Passos had driven ambulances himself, and the veterans' press accused him of slandering the AEF.
