The Heiress

William Wyler · 1949 CE · Film · Modern / American · Contemporary

Catherine Sloper, plain and tongue-tied in her father's Washington Square house, is courted at a cousin's party by a charming young man with no money and no occupation. Dr Sloper, who has never forgiven her for not being her mother, tells her the man wants the inheritance and threatens to cut her out. Wyler had Olivia de Havilland climb the staircase with a heavy trunk take after take, and the ascent became the signature.
