Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Ang Lee · 2000 CE · Film · Chinese · Contemporary

A Wudang swordsman gives up his green blade for a life he has never been able to declare to the woman he fights alongside, and the sword is stolen that night in Beijing by a governor's daughter trained in secret by the poisoner they both hunt. The chase runs from rooftops to a bamboo grove to the desert. Yuen Woo-ping's wire work and Lee's melodrama made wuxia legible to Western art houses.
