Esther
A Persian queen has kept her people secret from her husband until his first minister obtains a decree for their destruction, and she must go to the king unsummoned. Choruses of Israelite girls sing between the acts. Written after twelve years of silence for the schoolgirls of Saint-Cyr at Madame de Maintenon's request, it was performed by them before the king and read at court as a portrait of the court.
