Emilia Galotti

Gotthold Ephraim Lessing · 1772 CE · Play · German · Enlightenment

An Italian prince, idly taken with a portrait, learns that its subject is to be married that same morning, and a chamberlain who understands him without instruction arranges for the wedding party to be intercepted on the road. The girl's father is a soldier of rigid honour who has kept his family from court on principle. Lessing moved the Roman legend of Virginia into a petty modern court and wrote it in prose, not verse.
