Paradise Reclaimed

Halldór Laxness · 1960 CE · Novel · Nordic · Contemporary

A smallholder in the south of Iceland owns a horse so beautiful that when the king of Denmark passes through he gives it away, and the gift sets him walking — to Copenhagen, then across America to the Mormon settlements in Utah, learning to lay brick and to say very little. The wife and children left behind are taken in hand by a preacher and the farm falls in while he is gone. Laxness built it on Eirikur Olafsson of Brunir, a real Icelandic pilgrim who walked to Zion, and made the walk stand for every conversion that costs other people more than it costs the convert.
