Iceland's Bell

Halldór Laxness · 1946 CE · Novel · Nordic · Contemporary

In 1700 the bell at Thingvellir is shipped to Copenhagen for cannon metal, and the farmer ordered to help, Jon Hreggvidsson, is condemned for drowning the king's hangman and runs for Europe. Two others carry the rest: a magistrate's daughter who will not marry sensibly, and a scholar buying worm-eaten Icelandic manuscripts out of Danish farmhouses while Iceland starves. Written across the years Iceland took its independence, it models the scholar on Arni Magnusson, who really did save the sagas.
