Sagarana

João Guimarães Rosa · 1946 CE · Short Story · Latin American · Contemporary

Nine stories out of the cattle country of Minas Gerais: a piebald donkey too old to be worth his feed is the one animal that keeps its head when the herders are drunk and the river is up, and a bully left for dead in a ditch is nursed back by strangers and sets himself to earn a place in heaven. Backland speech is transcribed close, and the narration invents freely on top of it, coining words and bending the syntax to the voice. Rosa spent nearly ten years revising the manuscript after an early version was placed second in a competition, and the book announced a new Brazilian prose.
