Memorial

Alice Oswald · 2011 CE · Poem · English · Contemporary

Two hundred and more soldiers are named in the order they are killed at Troy, each given a few lines of who he was and how he died, and each death answered by a pastoral simile printed twice, like a keening. The story, the gods and the quarrels of the great men have been cut away entirely, leaving a roll call and the weather. Oswald called the method an excavation rather than a translation, withdrew the book from the Eliot Prize shortlist over its sponsor, and took the Warwick Prize for Writing with it in 2013.
