Anthem for Doomed Youth
The question is what passing-bells there are for men who die like cattle, and the answer is the monstrous anger of the guns and the stuttering rifles patterning out their hasty orisons. Candles, palls and flowers are then located not in any church but in the eyes and the drawn blinds of the people at home. A sonnet drafted at Craiglockhart War Hospital and revised on the page with Siegfried Sassoon, whose corrections survive on the manuscript.
