L'Avventura

Michelangelo Antonioni · 1960 CE · Film · Italian · Contemporary

A yachting party puts in at a bare volcanic island off Sicily and one of the women goes missing among the rocks; her lover and her closest friend search it, then carry the search onto the mainland, where it turns into something neither will name. Antonioni holds the shot on landscape and architecture after the people have walked out of the frame, and lets the plot's urgency drain away by design. Booed at Cannes and given a special prize the same week, it reset what a narrative was permitted to withhold.
