The Invention of Morel
A fugitive hiding out on a deserted island in the Pacific finds it suddenly full of well-dressed visitors who swim, dance and repeat their conversations, and who take no notice of him at all. He watches one of them, Faustine, come each evening to the rocks to look at the sunset beside a bearded man called Morel, and keeps a journal of what he can work out about the tide-driven machinery in the flooded basement. Borges called the plot perfect in the preface he wrote for it, and the island has been reworked by film and fiction ever since.
