Acquainted with the Night

Robert Frost · 1928 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Modernist

A walker has been out in rain and back in rain, has outwalked the furthest city light, has looked down the saddest city lane, and has passed the watchman on his beat unwilling to explain himself. An interrupted cry comes over houses from another street, but not to call him back or say goodbye, and at an unearthly height a luminary clock proclaims the time neither wrong nor right. Frost's one sustained experiment with terza rima, and the closest he came to writing the modern city.
