After Apple-Picking
A two-pointed ladder is still sticking through a tree toward heaven, a barrel unfilled beside it and two or three apples left on some bough, and the picker is done and cannot rub the strangeness from a sight that spent the morning looking through a pane of ice skimmed off the drinking trough. Magnified apples keep appearing and disappearing behind his eyes, his instep arch aches from the pressure of a rung, and he hears the rumbling sound of load on load going into the cellar bin. Frost's most heavily worked handling of the loose iambic line he called the sound of sense, from the 1914 book that made his name in London.
