Ion

Euripides · c. 413 BCE · Play · Greek · Classical

A foundling raised as a temple servant at Delphi sweeps the forecourt and guards the god's treasures, knowing nothing of his parents, when an Athenian queen arrives to ask Apollo why she is childless. Her husband is given an oracle naming the first person he meets on leaving the shrine as his son; the queen, years earlier, was raped by Apollo and left the baby in a cave with its cradle tokens. Its double plotting and its open scepticism about the god's conduct have made it the most modern-seeming of the surviving plays.
