Electra (Euripides)
Agamemnon's daughter has been married off to a poor farmer who leaves her untouched, and she keeps her grievance alive in a hovel on the Argive border while her brother comes back from exile in secret. The recognition scene ridicules the tokens by which Aeschylus had the two find each other, a lock of hair and a footprint and a scrap of weaving, and the killings are plotted as a squalid ambush at a country sacrifice. The deliberate lowering of the heroic register makes it the sharpest of the surviving answers to Aeschylus.
