The Trojan Women
Troy has fallen and its women wait on the shore among the ruins to learn which Greek has been allotted each of them: Hecuba the widowed queen, the prophetess Cassandra, Hector's widow Andromache with her small son, and Helen, brought out to argue for her life before the husband she left. Nothing is fought and nothing is won; the play is a sequence of losses arriving one after another while the ships are loaded. Staged months after Athens destroyed Melos and killed or enslaved its people, it remains the least consoling war play in the repertory.
