Rhesus

Euripides · c. 450 BCE · Play · Greek · Classical

One night in the tenth year of the war, seen from inside the Trojan camp: Hector is talked out of an immediate assault, sends Dolon between the lines as a spy for the promise of Achilles' horses, and receives a late-arriving Thracian ally who brings white horses and a great deal of confidence. Odysseus and Diomedes are already moving in the dark. Alone among surviving Greek tragedies it dramatises an episode of the Iliad directly; its authorship is disputed, with many scholars taking it for a fourth-century work by another hand, which leaves the date given here uncertain.
