Iphigenia among the Taurians

Euripides · c. 414 BCE · Play · Greek · Classical

Snatched from the altar at Aulis by Artemis and set down among the Taurians on the Black Sea, Agamemnon's daughter serves as priestess of a cult that sacrifices every Greek who lands there. She has just dreamt that her brother is dead when two young strangers are taken on the shore and brought to her for the rite. Aristotle singled out its recognition as the finest kind, and the plot became the standard model for the escape-and-rescue play down through Gluck and Goethe.
