Red Sorghum
A grandson assembles his grandparents out of village talk: a sixteen-year-old carried in a sedan chair to marry a leper who owns a distillery, the bearer who takes her into the sorghum on the way, and the bandit command the two of them run out of Northeast Gaomi Township. The Japanese arrive to build a road, a skinner is ordered to flay a captured man in front of his own people, and the ambush laid on the Jiao-Ping highway is told forwards and backwards at once. The book that made its author's name, and, in Zhang Yimou's version two years later, the first Chinese film to take the Golden Bear.
