Big Breasts and Wide Hips

Mo Yan · 1996 CE · Novel · Chinese · Contemporary

Shangguan Lu bears nine children in a Shandong village, eight daughters and at last a son, and hardly any of them are her husband's; the daughters attach themselves to men from every force that comes through, Nationalist, Communist, bandit and Japanese, so the century reaches the family by way of its sons-in-law. The son, weaned at seven and never really weaned, is the one left to carry the account through land reform, famine and boom. Denounced in the army press and withdrawn in China, and the book its author has said he would keep if he could keep only one.
