Cat Country

Lao She · 1932 CE · Novel · Chinese · Modernist

The only survivor of a crashed spacecraft comes down on Mars among the Cat People, whose scholars sell their students' diplomas, whose politicians rent out the national territory and whose whole population lives on a narcotic leaf. He is taken in as a curiosity and given a tour of the collapse. Lao She was uneasy about the book afterwards, and it stayed out of print in China for decades because nobody could read the Cat People as anyone but the Chinese.
