Crescent Moon

Lao She · 1935 CE · Short Story · Chinese · Modernist

A girl watches her widowed mother pawn the last of their things and then take the only work left to a woman with no family, and grows up understanding exactly what the arrangement in the next room is. Years afterwards, out of school and out of money, she is looking at the same thin moon over the same city. Lao She rebuilt it from a section of his novel Daminghu, whose only copy was destroyed when Japanese bombing hit the Shanghai presses in 1932.
