The Haunted House

Plautus · c. 200 BCE · Play · Roman · Classical

With his father away on business overseas, a young Athenian has spent the household money buying his mistress out of slavery and on a party that is still going at midday. The father's ship docks years early, and the slave Tranio meets him in the street with the news that the house has stood empty since a murdered guest began walking in it. Its farce of a servant improvising one lie on top of another to keep a door shut stands behind the Renaissance comedies of a household taken over in the master's absence.
