Argonautica

Apollonius of Rhodes · c. 250 BCE · Poem · Greek · Classical

Jason is sent to fetch the golden fleece from Colchis and assembles a crew that includes Heracles, Orpheus and the sons of the north wind, rowing east past clashing rocks, harpies and hostile kings. At the far end of the voyage Medea, the king's daughter and a priestess of Hecate, is struck with desire for him and must weigh a stranger against her father's house. Hellenistic epic of a new kind, learned and psychological and centerd on love as a force, and the direct model for Virgil's Dido.
