Anna in the Tropics

Nilo Cruz · 2002 CE · Play · Modern / American · Contemporary

In a Cuban-American cigar factory in Tampa in 1929, a hired lector begins reading Tolstoy's Anna Karenina to the workers, and the novel starts to rearrange their marriages and loyalties. The factory's old hand-rolling craft is also being undercut by mechanisation. Premiered in 2002 and the first Pulitzer for Drama given to a Latino playwright.
