Summer and Smoke

Tennessee Williams · 1948 CE · Play · Modern / American · Contemporary

A Mississippi minister's daughter, all nerves and elocution, has loved the doctor's son next door since childhood, and he has spent his adulthood proving how little of the soul he believes in. Across a summer of fever in the town and gunfire at the gambling house on the lake, each argues the other's case until the two positions have quietly changed hands. Williams kept rewriting it and thought the later version, The Eccentricities of a Nightingale, the better one.
