Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
A scoutmaster is appointed to a dead senator's seat because the machine behind the appointment expects him to be decorative, and his one bill puts a boys' camp on land already earmarked for a graft-funded dam. His cynical secretary teaches him how a filibuster works. Senators walked out of the Washington premiere calling it an insult, and within two years occupied France was screening it as a farewell to free speech.
