The Grass Is Singing
A town typist marries a failing farmer to stop the talk about her spinsterhood, and finds herself sealed under a tin roof on the Rhodesian veld with a man who cannot make the land pay. Her dependence on the household's African servants curdles into something she has no language for. The debut that made Lessing's name established the settler farm as a stage for the psychology of racial rule.
