The Memoirs of a Survivor
In a city whose services are failing and whose children have begun drifting east in gangs, a middle-aged woman is handed a girl of twelve and her ugly, devoted animal by a stranger who does not explain. The blank wall of her flat keeps opening onto rooms beyond it, some tidy and impersonal, some replaying a childhood that is not her own. Lessing called it an attempt at autobiography; it stands between her realist and her space-fiction phases.
