The Borrowers

Mary Norton · 1952 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

Under the kitchen floor of a quiet country house live Pod, Homily and Arrietty Clock, four inches high, who furnish their rooms out of whatever the human beings upstairs are careless enough to mislay. Arrietty is fourteen and has never been let out, and the first rule of borrowing is never to be seen. Norton turns ordinary household loss into a whole civilisation with its own etiquette, told at second hand by an old woman who half believes it.
