The Diary of a Good Neighbour

Doris Lessing · 1983 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

Janna, an immaculate magazine editor who visited neither her husband nor her mother while they died, meets a woman of ninety in a chemist's queue and begins calling at her verminous basement flat. What starts as penance turns into a daily discipline of coal, laundry and rage, recorded with the same eye Janna turns on fashion copy. Lessing issued it under the name Jane Somers to test how a first book is received; her own publishers declined it.
