Holes

Louis Sachar · 1998 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

A boy convicted of stealing a pair of trainers he never touched is sent to a camp on a dry Texas lakebed, where every inmate digs one five-foot hole a day and the warden asks what they turn up. His family blames a curse laid on a great-great-grandfather by a Latvian fortune teller, and the lakebed has its own history of an outlaw schoolteacher and a peddler selling onions. Sachar took both the Newbery Medal and the National Book Award for it.
