Live or Die
Every piece is dated like a journal entry across four years, and the argument runs between two of them: one explaining that suicides have a special language and care only which tools, and one at the end that settles on the newborn puppies and the sun. In between a mother writes to a daughter turning twelve about the fat girl she herself was, and an elegy is made for a friend who went first. Sexton let the sequence stand in the order written.
