To Bedlam and Part Way Back

Anne Sexton · 1960 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Contemporary

A doctor walks the hall of a mental hospital where the speaker calls herself queen of this summer hotel, counting the rows of moccasins the patients lace in the workshop. Later a woman writes to her small daughter about the two portraits painted in the year she twice tried to die and her mother was told the cancer was her fault. Sexton began writing at her therapist's suggestion and finished the book after hearing Snodgrass read Heart's Needle.
