Nickel and Dimed
A journalist takes low-wage jobs as a waitress, a hotel maid and a Walmart clerk in Florida, Maine and Minnesota, and tries to cover rent on what she earns. Her co-workers, the shared rooms and second jobs they depend on, and her own slow exhaustion supply the story. A first-person experiment in reportage that became the reference text on the working poor in America; the arc is thin and the book is admitted narrowly on the narrative test.
