Park Life
Shūichi Yoshida · 2002 CE · Short Story · Japanese · Contemporary
A man and a woman who do not know each other begin talking on a bench in Hibiya Park, in the middle of Tokyo, and the narrator's thoughts wander from the conversation. The story turns on small misunderstandings between people who share a place but little else. It won the Akutagawa Prize and brought Yoshida to a broad readership before Villain, his later crime novel.
