Schindler's Ark

Thomas Keneally · 1982 CE · Novel · Australian · Contemporary

A Sudeten German businessman arrives in occupied Kraków to make money from a confiscated enamelware works and staffs it with Jewish labor because Jewish labor costs least. Party member, black marketeer and drinking companion of the SS officer running the camp up the hill, he keeps adding names to a workforce his own accounts cannot justify. Keneally assembled it from survivor testimony, and its Booker win turned on the argument that documentary material could still be handled as fiction.
