The Book of Hours
A Russian monk who paints icons addresses God across three sequences - as a neighbour heard through a thin wall, as a darkness he is at home in, as something unfinished that the painter is helping to build. The last book turns from the cell to the great cities, where death arrives small and unripe and the destitute are the only people left holding anything whole. Written in three short bursts between 1899 and 1903 out of two journeys through Russia with Lou Andreas-Salomé, and the book that made Rilke's early name.
