Throwing Sparks
Tarek, a boy from a poor Jeddah district, enters the palace of a wealthy and powerful man known as the Master and is made the instrument of his punishments against his enemies. The novel exposes the cruelty limitless wealth can buy and the complicity of those who serve it. It won the International Prize for Arabic Fiction in 2010, was reported banned in Saudi Arabia, and was translated into English by Maia Tabet and Michael K. Scott.
