A Dance to the Music of Time
Twelve volumes follow Nicholas Jenkins from a public school in 1921 through Oxford, bohemian London, publishing, marriage and the war, tracking one widening circle of friends, lovers, painters and careerists across fifty years. Kenneth Widmerpool, the school butt nobody could stand, keeps reappearing at each turn a little further up. Powell took his title from a Poussin painting; critics have measured the sequence against Proust ever since.
