A Taste of Honey
A Salford schoolgirl hauled from one damp lodging to the next by a mother chasing men and drink is left on her own when the mother marries, spends Christmas with a Black sailor on shore leave, and takes in a gentle art student who keeps house for her as her pregnancy advances. Delaney wrote it at nineteen, after a night at the theatre convinced her that the north she knew was nowhere on an English stage, and sent it to Joan Littlewood. The Theatre Workshop production at Stratford East made it the one kitchen-sink work of the period written by a working-class woman.
