A Taste of Honey

Tony Richardson · 1961 CE · Film · English · Contemporary

A Salford schoolgirl, dragged between lodgings by a mother chasing men and drink, finds a brief romance with a Black sailor and sets up housekeeping with a gay textile student who cares for her as her pregnancy advances. Rita Tushingham's Jo faces the camera with a wit the canals and gasworks around her never dent. Shot on Manchester streets, it adapts Shelagh Delaney's 1958 play, written at nineteen for Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop, and put an unwed mother, a mixed-race romance and an openly gay character on British screens at once.
