Tom Jones

Tony Richardson · 1963 CE · Film · English · Contemporary

A foundling raised by a Somerset squire is cast out on the road to London, loving Sophie Western while tumbling through every bed and brawl between. Albert Finney winks at the camera, the famous eating scene turns supper into seduction, and freeze-frames and silent-film titles mock the costume picture from inside. Richardson brought Free Cinema irreverence to Fielding and took Best Picture, the New Wave's one runaway commercial triumph.
