Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ

Fred Niblo · 1925 CE · Film · Modern / American · Modernist

A Jewish prince in Roman Judea is condemned to the galleys after a loose roof tile falls on a passing governor, and the boyhood friend who signs the order is now a Roman officer. Years later the two meet on the sand of a chariot circuit built at full scale outside Rome and then rebuilt in Culver City. The costliest silent production, shot twice on two continents, with ships burned for real and a crash that killed horses.
